Not sure if anyone remembers the ‘75 hard’ era- a fitness challenge which intended for people to work out for 90 minutes per day, drink at least 4.5L of water, stick to a diet (any diet) for 75 consecutive days, along with a few other ‘non-negotiables’.
Fashion writer Mandy Lee (@oldloserinbrooklyn) has adapted that challenge for the fashion lovers. 75 days of challenging ourselves to reassess our relationship with ourselves and our wardrobes. We only wish we had thought of it first!
The challenge is as follows:
THE RULES
Before we move on to some examples of intentions you can set, let’s unpack the above.
Getting dressed everyday, even on days you might not be leaving the comforts of your bed, couch or desk, is a wonderful way to exercise your brain, consider new combinations you hadn’t thought of before, and play. Styling is playing. People often talk about ‘pre-shower makeup’ (doing a full face right before you take a shower to practise new skills or try out a new look)- this could be the same.
Documenting your daily outfits is essential- it’s basically like collecting data. It’s also so much easier with Whering *wink, wink*. By adding your outfits to your Whering planner daily, our ‘My Stats’ feature will show you the items you gravitate towards the most, the items you feel like you don’t have but should have, as well as having a helpful catalogue of outfit ideas for the next 75 days.
No new items? Sold. For Mandy, that includes no second-hand clothes either, but you can tailor it to fit you. Learning how to work with what you have, as well as feeling comfortable with what you have is a wonderful skill to build on.
Getting creative and using your own brain for inspiration might sound like it’s not as important as the other points , but it soooo is. Often when going to social media (think Instagram, Pinterest, Tiktok) for inspiration, we actually veer towards imitation, which blocks us from actually coming up with original ideas. Looking at what you own and seeing what you gravitate towards naturally is imperative when considering your personal style.
SETTING YOUR INTENTIONS
This is where it could vary from person to person.
Some great examples which Mandy gives include saving money (great), slowing down your consumption (also great) and learning more about yourself and your personal style without shopping distractions (fantastic).
To us, this is also a great way to get out of a style rut and fall back in love with your wardrobe. When you work from home as much as we do, it’s easy to throw on a jumper and some leggings most days, and when it finally comes to going out, you feel like you just need something new to make yourself feel better. Putting in the effort to get dressed every day is a great way to exercise your creative brain, come up with new outfits that you love (or even some you don’t), and feel like your best self for no one else but yourself.
Finally, Mandy includes some optional style prompts, like styling one of your oldest pieces, taking something formal and styling it for every day, etc. Luckily for all of you, we’ve got a whole Tiktok filter to help you in that department too!
