The Best Dressed Athletes Today

By Nona Dimitrova published 16/07/2024

...according to, well, us.

Between Wimbledon, the Euros, and the much anticipated (or infamously anticipated) 2024 Paris Olympics, this summer is first and foremost BRAT summer, but secondly, sporty spice summer.

While film premiers and fashion events get pushed to the side for a brief moment, sporting events have become this summer's fashion week. And they haven't disappointed!

Case and point:

Spectators & fashion have always gone hand in hand with sports events. Think about all the iconic people sitting court-side at NBA matches (*cough cough* Rihanna) or WAG culture and Victoria Beckham's iconic baby tees.

But it's not all guests and court-side spectators. So without further ado, here are some of our favourite athletes-turned-fashion icons.

1. Lewis Hamilton (F1)

Seven-time F1 world champion and #1 in our fashion hearts, Sir Lewis Hamilton was an obvious choice.

From mixing feminine and masculine silhouettes, layering patterns and textures, to sporting, mixing and matching designers like Kenzo, Rick Owens and more recently becoming Dior's new male ambassador, Lewis Hamilton is a certified fashion icon.

2. Maria Sharapova (Tennis)

Five-time grand slam winner, Maria Sharapova, is an icon both on and off the court.

In her own words, Maris Sharapova gravitates towards "clean simple lines" and neutral colours and staple pieces. "An all black look, is a statement no matter where it's worn." (Vogue 2015)

3. Héctor Bellerin (Football)

Need! To! See! Him! In! A! 90s! Sitcom!

Usually opting for a slouchy 90s-esque silhouette, Bellerin looks comfortable, like he knows how to put a good outfit together, and like he's just stepped off the set of FRIENDS, all at the same time. Oh, he also walked for Louis Vuitton AW20, which is pretty cool.

His street style looks are also very easy to recreate, so we'll definitely be taking a page out of his book. Héctor Bellerin moodboard incoming.

4. Dina Asher-Smith (Sprinter)

Asher-Smith can be seen being drawn to bold silhouettes, colours and textures. Just like on the track, where she can be seen sprinting 100m in under 11 seconds, Dina Asher-Smith isn’t afraid of standing out with her fashion choices too. And we’re, naturally, obsessed.

5. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander (Basketball)

From full Chrome Hearts, to relaxed street-wear fits, there’s hardly anything Shai Gilgeous-Alexander hasn’t experimented with off the court. And hardly anything he’s looked less than incredible in.

6. Cameron Brink (Basketball)

Los Angeles Sparks WNBA forward, Cameron Brink, sparkles both on and off the court. How many on-and-off the court puns can I make in this one article? TBD.

She often talks about levitating between feminine and masculine silhouettes. Sometimes a more comfortable outfit may look like cargos and a t-shirt, and sometimes walking into game-day will look like a structural cropped Mugler cut-out blazer. We love a girl who can, and will, do both.

7. Jackson Irvine (Football)

Mixing a relaxed Melbourne silhouette with a sprinkle of Berlin cool, Jackson Irvine can often be seen donning slouchy trousers- both denim and tailored- perfectly oversized tees and a silky bandana-turned-neck scarf.

8. Skylar Diggins-Smith (Basketball)

If there’s one thing Skylar Diggins-Smith will do, it’s land a shot and serve a look. Oh, wait, that’s two things.

Skylar Diggins-Smith’s style can be characterised as playful, sophisticated, sleek, and comfortable. Not one to shy away from an iconic NBA reference and an incredibly tailored suit. Love, love, love!
